I just got back from a Disaster Relief Hurricane Deployment near Lake Charles, Louisiana.
As is often the case something about Bible Belt Christianity catches my attention. This time it was the Christian T-Shirts. They were very creative. Very attention grabbing and a lot of them were beautiful. Most had a slogan or Bible verse on them. None of the people wearing them engaged me in a conversation about Jesus. None inquired about my Spiritual status. Maybe they expected me to respond to the message on the T-shirt. Possibly they felt they had proclaimed Jesus by wearing the T-shirt and on one level they did. Often they got an internal response from me all they way from making me take a few moments to think about the message on the shirt to thinking that message is not in keeping with the message of Jesus. Sometimes they had a mixed message about the Bible, Jesus and politics or patriotism. Those had a negative affect on me.
I am all for T-Shirt Evangelism. Get the message of Jesus’ love and forgiveness out there any way you can.
But, The thing is If you depend on your T-shirt to tell others you are a Follower of Jesus, then I am afraid you missed something when Jesus talked about the Kingdom of God. Better reread the Sermon on the Mount in Matthew 5 – 7 and go over Matthew 25:31 – 46 again. —
