The Bible has a lot to say about our responsibility to the poor and needy. Here is a sample :
WISDOM LITERATURE
If you help the poor, you are lending to the LORD—and he will repay you! Proverbs 19:17 NIV
JESUS
Looking at the man, Jesus felt genuine love for him. “There is still one thing you haven’t done,” he told him. “Go and sell all your possessions and give the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.” Mark 10:21 NIV
EARLY CHURCH LEADERS TO NEW GENTILE FOLLOWERS OF JESUS
Their only suggestion was that we keep on helping the poor, which I have always been eager to do. Galatians 2:10 NIV
ANGEL TO ROMAN SOLDIER
At Caesarea there was a man named Cornelius, a centurion in what was known as the Italian Regiment. He and all his family were devout and God-fearing; he gave generously to those in need and prayed to God regularly. One day at about three in the afternoon he had a vision. He distinctly saw an angel of God, who came to him and said, “Cornelius!” Cornelius stared at him in fear. “What is it, Lord?” he asked. The angel answered, “Your prayers and gifts to the poor have come up as a memorial offering before God. Acts 10:1 – 4 NIV
JAMES, BROTHER OF JESUS, TO CHURCH FELLOWSHIP
Suppose a man comes into your meeting wearing a gold ring and fine clothes, and a poor man in filthy old clothes also comes in. If you show special attention to the man wearing fine clothes and say, “Here’s a good seat for you,” but say to the poor man, “You stand there” or “Sit on the floor by my feet,” have you not discriminated among yourselves and become judges with evil thoughts? Listen, my dear brothers and sisters: Has not God chosen those who are poor in the eyes of the world to be rich in faith and to inherit the kingdom he promised those who love him? But you have dishonored the poor. James 2:2 – 6 NIV
APOSTLE JOHN
If anyone has material possessions and sees a brother or sister in need but has no pity on them, how can the love of God be in that person? Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth. 1 John 3:17 – 18 NIV
