The French Professor

The French Professor

When I was in college in 1961, yep that long ago, we had a new professor to teach French at our Baptist College. I barely passed the class. All I remember is the word for beach which I have never had the opportunity to use.

He was a middle-aged man from France. It was not long before he was in trouble with the local pastors and school authorities. It seems that he visited the local liquor store and bought wine regularly. In the early 1960s in the Bible Belt, this was a major sin.

In our class, defending himself, he told us that in France all the Baptists drank wine but that smoking would have you kicked out of the church. At the time some Baptist Churches looked as if they were on fire from all the people trying to get a cigarette between Sunday school and worship.

Just a reminder. Times and cultures are different. Be careful how you judge one another and set standards for others. Be concerned about what really matters. A person’s character.

The man only taught there for one year. I don’t know any of the details about why he left but it appears it affected his career.

Is this an example of what Jesus was referring to when he told the story about trying to remove a speck from another eye when you had a board in your own eye?
Matthew 7:1 – 5
